Can anyone help me please? I'm trying to understand why the birth of someoone is registered twice under different surnames. This concerns four siblings whose parents weren't married and each child is registered seperately under the surname of the father and then again under the surname of the mother ?

Hi
Well it's a new one to me. Perhaps you could post a little more information, it's easier to deal with concrete examples than hypethetical questions

This information is from the Lancs BMD site, but applies to the other BMD sites in the group and the GRO Index.
2. What information is contained in the indexes?
From the indexes, you can find out: [/i]
(a) The Name of the child, as shown in the registers. If the child's parents were unmarried, and both are named on the certificate, then the child should be indexed under both surnames. Some children had not been given forenames by the time of registration, and are simply recorded as 'Male' or 'Female'...[/b]
