I am trying find information concerning the Civil Defence organisation in the Godley/Hyde area during WW2. My grandfather Rowland Ernest Fielding was part of a Civil Defence group during that time. Does anybody know if records were kept of those involved and if so would I be able to access them? If not can anybody tell me where I might find general on-line info on what the organisation did. Many thanks

Hi Jennywren Others may know about Civil Defence arrangements specific to the Tameside area but the organisation has a website that, amongst other things, gives a good overview of the purpose and function. www.civildefenceassociation.org.ukWoody

Hi Woody, Thank you very much for the suggesting that wonderful website. ;)I have given it a quick scan and have bookmarked it to visit and read in more depth when I have the time. My grandfather was a warrant officer (School Master) in the Royal Navy and served in WW1 so probably felt compelled to 'do his bit' even though he was thought of as too old to enlist at that time. Do you or anybody else know where I might a photo or illustration of what the uniform looked like? Thanks for your help

Hi again
When you get round to having a proper look at the website, just have a browse through the menu and open the document entitled 'Brief History of Civil Defence'. There are plenty of photos in there, but on page 21, you'll find one of a man who was on the naval side of CD duties together with a short article about his role.
Unfortunately, the documents's in PDF format so I don't know whether you'll be able to download any of the photos. A printout and a scanner should do the trick.

Hi Woody I had a closer look at the PDF Document and found the picture on pg 21 (just didn't get that far the first time!) If the picture was a little clearer I could probably read what the badges have written on them - probably my aged eyes! I googled Civil Defence World War 2 England and lots of sites came up but visited www.anglotopia.net/tag/world-war-2/ and came up with some awesome photos. It is worth a visit. Thank you for your help - I will continue to browse the internet and if I find some noteworthy sites will do a post here to let others know. Cheers ;D
