Hi, Does anyone know how I could trace back some local ancestors who originally came from Italy but settled in the Manchester and Ashton areas at the turn of the century. I am hopin that the 1911 census will help eventually but since I cant find them on the 1901 census but have a marriage in 1907, I think these are the two dates between which they arrived.
Thanks Jill
Thank-you.

Hi, Jill I'm sure you know but just in case you don't, the 1991 census is now available at www.1911census.co.uk/Phil

In answer to the Manchester part of your question. Assuming that the family were not lodging with other people they should appear in the Manchester Trade Directories. It may help you post their names and the details of the 1907 marriage. If other members of the family married shortly after their details may be on Lancsbmd.
There were quite a lot of Italian families who were living in the Ancoats area of Manchester at this time. Some of them became well known names in the city as ice cream vendors.
Regards,
Gerard

This is a good site for Italians settling in Ancoats, Manchester. The site has a message board facility. The community was a very close one and most of the families knew others in different areas. www.ancoatslittleitaly.com/I'm sure it would be worth you posting your information on their message board, to see if more information is available Sandra

Thanks everyone, I'll follow your advice and let you know how I get on.
I tried the free bit of the 1911 census with no joy so I'll probably get a voucher at some point. Does anyone know when ancestry might add it on their website?
Thanks, Jill

This is quite interesting - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simone_PerrottaA member of the Italian 2006 World Cup Winning team. From wiki: Perrotta lived in England until the age of 4, attending the former St Ann's RC Primary School, Burlington Street, Ashton-under-Lyne. His parents, Francesco and Anna Maria, ran a pub in Ashton and lived on Fitzroy Street and briefly at the Chiltern Chapel before moving back to Italy in 1982. Perrotta is of Calabrian origins despite being born in England.
