Hi Guys
Just wondering if anyone can help me with what seems to be developing into a little mystery! Susannah/Susan Hassall was a great-Aunt of my paternal grandmother. She married a Richard Garnett, who I believe came from Stockport area.
I have discovered they had 5/6 children and that in 1881 the eldest child, a Harriet Ann Garnett then aged 18 was living in Stalybridge with her maternal grandfather and other family members. However, I can find no trace of the father and mother, Richard & Susannah Garnett, nor any of her siblings in the 1881 Census for Eng & Wales.
If anyone else has time and/or inclination or any pointers as to what to do and where to look next I'd be extremely grateful.
Thanks in advance

Hi jacybaby I had a quick look in 1881 myself and, like you, found absolutely zilch for anyone in this family bar daughter Harriet Ann. The 1871 census tells us that Richard Garnett was born about 1841 in Yorkshire (possibly Idle near Bradford), married at St George, Hyde in 1862, and there were six children altogether. Susannah reverted to plain Susan after the 1871 census and I'm pretty sure she died at Stralybridge in 1929 under that name. I think husband Richard departed life in 1885 and you'll find both records at www.cheshirebmd.org.uk. If the family didn't migrate temporarily between 1874 (the date of birth in Stalybridge of son George Henry) and 1886 (the date of birth in Stalybridge of youngest son, Richard) - and I didn't find any evidence they did migrate - the problem is probably due to a major transcription error. Have you tried a search engine using the most unusual first name and only the first two or three letters of the surname coupled to an asterix ? It's likely to be a long job but you might just get some clues. The easiest website to use free for this purpose is probably www.findmypast.com In 1911 Susannah (Susan) was living with unmarried daughter Harriet Ann at 12 Church Street, Stalybridge along with three other unmarried children, Mary Emma (1872), George Henry (1875) and, rather poignantly, Richard (1886) who looks as though he was born just after his father's death and named for him. I have the possible baptism record and the relevant census returns if you want them.

Cheers mate, again. My searches reveal 10 children born to Garnett with Hassall as the mother's maiden name in Hartshead/Stalybridge areas at this time. But the baptism record and relevant census returns would be great in an email when you get a chance. Thanks.
If Susan/Susannah did die in 1929 this would make her 89, a great age. And not impossible since it seems many of the women in the Hassall family are blessed with longevity! It would be a shame if there has been some transcription error as this si the only stumbling block in this particular branch of the family, although I've made good prgress so far.
Thanks again for all your help/advice

Woody,
Mystery solved! I found the rest of the family in the 1881 Census living at 4 St Georges Terrace, Ashton. The problem was as you suspected a transcription error. 'Garett' rather than 'Garnett'.
Cheers again

Hi Jill
Sorry I only just read your post. Your Jane Hassall b 1927 was the sister-in-law of my Susannah Hassall b 1848!!! Susannah married (1869) Janes brother John Norton Hassall b 1846. John Norton Hassall was my GG Grand-father through my paternal Grandmothers line.
