Hi my name is Sarah Jones and I currently live in cardiff. My grandfather was a policeman ~1930 in Dukinfield and I'm trying to trace my Aunt's baptism certificate. She is still alive and living in America. I wondered if this group may be able to help. I'll post a query on the appropriate part of the website. thanks, Sarah

Hi my name is Keith Stewart, sadly my mother died in December last year. I am trying to gather as much information with regard to family. My grandmother was Ann Bardsley, my grandfather Tom Bardsley they lived 12 Bethal Place Dukinfield. I understand he worked and was killed at a local foundry. My mother referred to Chapel Hill Methodist school and the family attended their local chapel. Other than this I know very little. I would be extremely grateful if anyone could help or provide any information. Many thanks Keith

Hi Keith
As you've probably realised, 'Bardsley' is one of the most common surnames in this area. We might have a better chance of helping you if you can provide a clue about approximate dates (ages, marriage) for your grandparents, Ann and Tom Bardsley. I'm assuming your mother was Dorothy ?

Hi Woody Yes my mother's name was Dorothy, she was born on the 21 8 1921. Regarding my Grandparents I have no further information, no dates. only the address my mother gave me and that she attended, as a child, the local chapel. Very limited information I know and equally frustrating but would appreciate any assistance. Thanks Keith

I'm struggling to find a marriage for Ann & Tom. Do you have or could you get a copy of your mum's birth cert which would have her mum's maiden name?

Hi Keith
Being in August, your mother’s birth couldn’t have been registered earlier than the July-September quarter of 1921 and is unlikely to have rolled over into 1922. There are only two UK Dorothy Bardsley birth registrations in that quarter and only one in the next, all in Tameside.
In one instance the mother’s maiden name is ‘Meakin’, and in the other it’s ‘Bardsley’ so we’re seeking any marriage between either ‘Ann/Annie Meakin or Ann/ Annie Bardsley’ and Tom/ Thomas Bardsley. I’m afraid that despite using a wide range of spelling combinations, I can’t find any record of a UK marriage that matches these criteria.
I’m with Lindylou on this one. With no marriages and so many people named Thomas/Tom or Ann/Annie Bardsley, there’s virtually no other way.
On a more positive note, I’ve looked at one of the three surviving electoral rolls for Dukinfield – 1930/31 – which confirms that Tom and Annie Bardsley lived at 12 Bethel Place, Dukinfield in 1929. Unfortunately, the service for retrieving documents from the library archives shuts down at 7.30 so I was too late to view the records for 1950/51 or 1960/61. It does at least mean that your grandparents died after 1929.
Bethel Place comprised ten even-numbered houses that ran off parallel to King Street between 6 & 8 West Street, Dukinfield. West Villa (now a mental health centre) was the end house in Bethel Place and stood at the junction of Bethel Place and 6 West Street. Although West Street is still there today, Bethel Place probably disappeared as part of the Dukinfield urban renewal programme of the 1960s. There was no Bethel Place before the 1861 census and that date would tie in with the arbitrary 1960s planners’ view that any dwelling house over one hundred years old was a worthy target for demolition.
