While I was hunting for a map site that would help me pin down Kerry's Newmarket Tavern, I consulted Gay's list of resources. The wishful comment attached to the Irish map-site that overlays a modern map on an old map stayed with me.
I then stumbled across an amazing map website that almost does that for the whole of Cheshire. Of course, I might just be slow on the uptake and other people might already have found it, but I'd never seen it before and I think it's worth sharing.
If you Google ‘e-mapping Victorian Cheshire: Search‘ you’ll get free access to maps which not only twin a modern map to each 1850 location, but also allow you to expand/contract the view so that you can place the property in the context of the whole district, past and present.
I had to play around with the site instructions for a while, but it was well worth the time and effort.
Just enter your own ‘postcode’ into the appropriate search box and you’ll get almost straight to the goodies about your own house.
It works for any Cheshire postcode, and you can get 15 free postcode searches per day from the Post office website. This might get you there
