Researching Harris family from Ashton,1920-1860,Oldham,1920-1850,Clitheroe,1850-1700,Burnley,1900-1800,Preston1800-1877.
Trying to link a Rev Robert Harris born Clitheroe 1764 died 1862 in Preston to my line. The son of a goods carrier Robert Harris, he was born in Clitheroe in 1764 and was educated at Clitheroe Grammar School and at Sidney College, Cambridge. The Harris family connections with the town of Preston began in 1788, when the Rev Robert Harris BD was appointed headmaster of Preston Grammar School, which in those days was in Stoneygate. In 1797 he was appointed Rector of St George's Church, combining his duties with his role as headmaster of the town's leading education establishment. He Had a cousin Roger Harris Plasterer of Clitheroe who died in 1857 age 84. My line of Harris are mostly Plasterers from Clitheroe and then settled in Ashton u lyne, so seem to think there could well be a connection, Is there anybody who could help me solve this. Regards Roy

Interesting ancestors, Roy.
It seems that Rev Robert’s son, Edmund Robert Harris was the principle benefactor to Preston in the mid-1800s. A lawyer, he made his fortune through investments in the railways and the £300,000 he left in his will set up a reference library in Preston, an oprhanage and the Harris College, now part of Central Lancashire University, I believe.
Given Edmund's profile, I would have thought somebody would have investigated this line previously but I haven't found anything. Neither he nor his brother Thomas married, and so far as I can see, there was only one other sibling, Helen Elizabeth Harris. All these birth records are on the IGI.
Do you have more information about the Ashton under Lyne ancestors – names, dates of birth, marriage partners etc. or is this a blank sheet ?

Rev Robert Harris married Nancy Lodge 19/11/1801 and had 4 children a son that died in infancy 1802. Ellen 15/4/1807 -1849
Edmund 19/11/1803 Thomas 6/9/1805 I found in a newspaper article.
Death and Funeral, of E. R. Harris, ESQ -It will be heard with feelings of very considerable regret that MR EDMUND ROBERT HARRIS died at his residence Winfield, Ashton, early on Sunday morning. The deceased gentleman was the son of the Rev Robert Harris A former incumbent of St.George’s, Preston. The family of which The deceased was a prominent member originally belonged to Clitheroe, but on appointment of the Rev. R Harris to the incumbency of St. Georges about 70 years Ago, a position which he held with considerable credit for A period of half a century, they removed to Preston, where they have since resided. The deceased, and his brother Thomas Harris, who died in 1875, were early in life articled to the legal profession, and in partnership they succeeded to the pactice of their uncles, Edmund and Jonathan Lodge, who, like themselves, were bachelors throughout life.
This is why im finding it difficult because this line died.
As for the Harris line from Ashton which is my line. Jane,1835 Clitheroe Joseph 1841 Clitheroe, Plasterer Sarah 1843 Clitheroe James 1845 Clitheroe, Plasterer. They then moved to Ashton as of 51,61,71,81,91 census there parents were William Harris Plasterer and Mary Grandige married 1833 in Clitheroe. William was born in Carlisle 1812ish when his father Robert was in the army. I have Roberts discharge papers he served in the army from 1811 till 1818 with the 55th, or Westmorland Regiment of Foot. William's father was called Robert Harris born 1790 Clitheroe also a Plasterer before being called up. At this point is where i am trying to link the two family's together . did trades run in the family? Plasterer's in my case.
As from my first text. He Had a cousin Roger Harris Plasterer of Clitheroe who died in 1857 age 84
kind Regards Roy

Hi Roy Thanks for the new information, Roy. You seem to already have everything that’s readily available about the Ashton under Lyne Harris ancestors. I’m due a visit to the Tameside Library shortly and if you can’t get there yourself, I don’t mind trying to look up something specific. Just ask me. The Pigot Directory (1828-29) for Cumberland, Lancashire, etc. has two ‘Clithero’ listings for ‘Harris’. One is the Roger Harris you’ve mentioned, a plasterer & painter living at Well gate. The other is his brother, John Harris, town serjeant also at Well gate. You’ll find this free searchable Trades Directory at www.historicaldirectories.org. I first clicked ‘search by County’, ‘Lancashire’, found 1828-29 and then specified a search for ‘Clithero’ (the modern spelling ‘Clitheroe’ won’t work) When I've put it into some kind of order, rather than clutter up the message board I'll send you a PM with the Clitheroe/ Preston information I'm finding, although I suspect it's stuff you already have.
