Thomas was supposedly born circa 1837 in A-u-L. I've found him in A-u-L in 1881, and in Sheffield in 1871 with his wife Ellen and family, but I can't find him before that. Anyone know anything about him?

I found a marriage of Thomas to Ellen Bree in 1860 on Cheshire BMD - it looks like a Registrar Attended marriage reference Ashton RM/18/2. Just a gut instinct that this could be a Catholic marriage and that Thomas and Ellen's children which were born in Ashton might be baptised at either St Annes' or St Mary's. We could check this further next week at the library.
I too have searched for Thomas in 1851 and 1861 on both Ancestry and FindmyPast and in the Ashton unfilmed for 1851, but I did find Ellen on the 1851 census, with her parents James and Ellen Bree living with a family of McHales at Back Brook Street in Ashton Patt McHale's wife is from Sheffield and so is Ellen Bree's father, but her mother Mary is from Ireland. I can send the census image privately, but below is the record transcript from Ancestry.
Thomas and Ellen must be around Ashton until there youngest child was born in 1869 in Sheffield

More information, these are Thomas and Ellen's children's birth registration in Ashton:
Birth Indexes
HARLOW Mary Ann 1860 Ashton Town Tameside Cheshire AST/50/31
HARLOW Catharine 1862 Ashton Town Tameside Cheshire AST/54/54 HARLOW Thomas 1864 Ashton Town Tameside Cheshire AST/60/16
There were quite few more HARLOWS registered in Ashton around the same time - so his family ought to be around somewhere.

Hi Lenhar As Gay says, it looks certain that Thomas married Ellen Bree at a civil ceremony in Ashton, 1860 and it's just a guess, but I suspect the ancestry may be Irish. If you haven’t already done so, it might be worth getting hold of the certificate to see whether there is more information about his father. On the other hand, I found a death record in 1855 at Ashton under Lyne for a Thomas Harlow, aged 50 (DUK/60/24), which I thought might prove relevant to a 1851 search and took a brief dive into that. I eventually found a very promising listing at Ashton under Lyne in the 1851 census at the www.findmypast.com paysite, although the transcription is in the name ‘Hurlow’. It's free to search and if you try that, get into the 1851 census and enter nothing but the second name ‘Hurlow’ (click the box for 'include varaiants) and the place of residence as ‘Ashton under Lyne’. It should pop the whole family up, including the Thomas you’re seeking, and you can then decide whether to buy pay-as-you-go access for one of them. It looks as if Thomas Harlow jnr died age 44 at Ashton in 1882 (AST/85/45), and wife Ellen, age 39, at Dukinfield in 1877 (DUK/60/24) I see Gay has already found Ellen Bree’s history. Woody
