Hi everyone,i was wondering if anyone on this site lives anywhere near St Michaels church in Ashton-u-lyne? Im trying to find out if one or more of my rellies was buried there! Im not sure how to find out and was wondering if a kind person with a little free time might mind having a look in the churchyard for a headstone or at the burial records in the church itself(not sure if they would keep them on the premises?) if anyone can help id be most grateful, kind regards Lisa Robert Jones Whitworth died 1868

Hi peggytoof
Whilst I was digging in the archives tonight, I had a trawl through the microfilm for Ashton St Michael burials from mid 1867 - mid 1869. Although the death registration is definitely 1868 in the BMD records, I couldn't find anything at all on the microfilm for Robert [Jones] Whitworth during that period. Are we sure it's a St Michael record of burial ?
On the other hand, there's a record for a Samuel Whitworth who died on Nov 1st, 1869 aged 81. He might be one of yours and if so, there's an interesting note attached "The first dead body to be brought through the new gates from Stamford Street".
Another record I found whilst looking through the booklet 'Jubilee Souvenir ...' for Hollyberry's stuff was on Nov 1st, 1866. James Whitworth of Mossley drowned and his body was eventually found in the river at Stockport on Dec 1st. Don't know whether you had people in Mossley ?
Cheers
