Hi
I wonder if any one has info on the Waterhouse residents of Mossley around 1800. I am looking for family links. Joseph Waterhouse was born in 1805. He was christened at Mossley New Conection Methodist Jan.1806 . Mother Alice father William. In 1841 he was living in Oldham above town. A long shot is a sister named Betty Waterhouse born Mossley 1797 married to a Crompton.

Hi Missive
If you already have this information, it's just confirmation. If not, there’s an 1851 census record for a Joseph Waterhouse, born 1805, Oldham. He’s a green grocer living at 8 Charlotte Street, Oldham Below Town.
If his birthplace was actually in the Lydgate area of Oldham or similar, that would be geographically close enough for Mossley to come into play in that era.
Everyone else listed at that 1851 address was born in Oldham and the children are all unmarried:
Sarah (wife) b abt 1804 Joseph (son), Bookkeeper, b abt 1829 William (son), Railway Clerk, b abt 1831 James (son), Cotton Piecer b abt 1833 Samuel (son), Cotton Piecer, b abt 1836 Sarah (daughter), Cotton Piecer, b abt 1837 Emma (daughter) b abt 1841 Harriett (daughter) b abt 1844 John (son) b abt 1847
There’s an 1851 census listing for Betty Crompton, a 54 year-old widow born at Mossley and living at 8 Silver Street, Oldham Below Town. Also living here are unmarried hat trimmer daughter, Mary (b abt 1823, Oldham), and widowed mother, Alice Waterhouse (b abt 1779, Mossley)
I found a possible christening for Mary Crompton in the IGI 15 Aug 1822, Oldham whose parents are Henry Crompton and wife Betty. Chasing this reference back to the 1841 census, there’s a possible family listed at Silver Street, Oldham Below Town which comprises
Henry Crompton, a hatter, b abt 1801 Betty (wife) b abt 1801 William (son), apprentice joiner, b abt 1821 Mary (Daughter) hat trimmer, b abt 1826 Thomas (son), cotton labourer, b abt 1827 David (son), b abt 1829 Ann (daughter) b abt 1832 Joseph (son) b abt 1835
There’s an Oldham marriage in 1819 for Henry Crompton listed in the IGI. His wife is Betty but no second name, which is a bit unhelpful.
Sadly, none of us was able to solve the mystery of the dog.

A Waterhouse family (Mother and 5 children) lived in Mossley in 1841 (census). Their lodger is believed to be my Great Great Grandfather - still checking!

Thank you for the feed back. Crompton lead was helpful. Joseph on some census states his birth Oldham on others Mossley?
