Hi I am researching the Stanfield family I know Emily married James Hughes not sure on dates but James used to be Lord Mayor of Ashton Under Lyne.
Is there a place where a list of previous Lord Mayors can be found?

Hello Florence, Emily Stanfield married James Hughes at Droylsden St Mary's Church in 1939. The reference number to order a copy of the certificate from Tameside Register Office is CE11/8/247 The website to use for all Tameside Births, Marriages and Deaths is www.cheshirebmd.org.ukFor a full explanation you can visit this page on my website: www.tamesidefamilyhistory.co.uk/bmds.htmThe best place to check for a list of Mayors would be Tameside Local Studies and Archives Centre who hold the council archives for all the towns which made up Tameside. Good Luck! with this and let us know how you get on. Any more questions and there are people here ready to help. very best wishes, GAY

Hi Florence Can you give us a clue about the date range please. www.tameside.gov.uk/mayor/former Although John Hughes is there, James doesn't appear on this published list of former mayors of Tameside. Tamside only came into being in 1974) so he would have been mayor at some point before that date. To become mayor, he would also have had to serve a lengthy term as a local councillor so if all else fails, you could always try an enquiry to the local political parties. There is a possible marriage between Emily Stanfield and James Hughes at Droylsden, St Mary's (Tameside ref: CE11/8/247) in 1939. Woody

Hi Florence , The book you need is "The People Who Made Tameside" held in the Local Studies at Ashton. This lists all mayors and councillors from 1847-1974 for each town then upto 1992 for Tameside.I'm afraid I can't see any mention of James Hughes. Sorry!
