Hello, my name is Brian and I used to live in Audenshaw as a boy in the 1950s. I have been researching the Gordon and Haslam families for some time but have “hit a wall” with my earliest identified ancestor on the paternal side: William Gordon
William was born in 1795 in Stockport and is traceable up to the 1871 census when he was living at 21 Victoria St in Ashton with his daughter Hannah, son Joseph and grandson William. Daughter Hannah was still at this address in the 1881 Census but William(b1795) was not and had presumably died between censuses. I have not found a relevant death record on Ancestry or Cheshire BMD Index but William was alive in November 1876 as he reported the death of his son James. His address then is given as 18 PEEL SQUARE, Ashton under Lyne. (Why he left 21 Victoria Street, when his family was still there is also a mystery).
1) Peel Square does not appear to exist any more. Does anyone know where it was in Ashton in 1876 and what is now in its place? 2) Does anyone know the exact death year of William Gordon.
Thank you.
