If anybody’s interested in knowing more about Hyde in the 1800s, Thomas Middleton’s book, ‘Annals of Hyde & District’, 1899, might prove useful. It’s actually more a collection of extracts from local newspapers, personal observations and anecdotes stretching back over the previous 60 years and it’s freely available to view through the University of California archive www.archive.org/details/annalsofhydedist00middialaThe first part describes how the localities within a 5-mile radius of Hyde developed, including some interesting comments about boundary changes. There are also short descriptions of every church in Hyde together with details of the prominent people connected to them. It’s a real goldmine if your ancestor was a local politician because there’s an outline of the career of every mayor of Hyde during the 1800s. Likewise, there are comprehensive details of local MPs and their respective family histories. The book is littered with stories about, and references to, local people and events. These include accounts of the Great Flood of 1799; Chartist agitations in Hyde; the Irish Rising 1841; the Cotton Panic; The Werneth Low Races; the residents of Glass Houses, etc, etc. If you decide to have a look, select the download in PDF format from the left-hand side menu. All other options tend to dislocate the text and don’t re-produce the illustrations. Woody

Thanks, very useful, I found a few name I was looking for, especially in the 'Bygone Stalybridge' book. A very easy to use resource too.
