The Uttleys seem to have been a family of some note in the Stalybridge and Dukinfield area between the 1830's, when they arrived from Slaithwaite near Huddersfield, and the 1920's
James Uttley owned property, "20 messuages or dwelling houses and shop" in Brierley Street, Stalybridge in 1847 and was recorded in the 1841 and 1851 censuses as a retired grocer. His great grandson, Frederick William Uttley, ran a family furniture business at 417 King Street, Dukinfield from around 1880 until his death in 1923.
I'm trying to find out more about their arrival from Yorkshire, when and why, and to fill in the gap between James and Frederick. I know James had a daughter, Ann, who had a son out of wedlock, another James, who was the father of Frederick but that's about it. There is a row of houses on Victoria Street marked as Uttleys Terrace. It would be lovely to know why!!

Hi Phil
Not sure that I can help at all, but I am connected to the Uttley's.
My great aunt, Lena Smith, married Thomas Uttley (b 1907). His parents were Thomas (b 1881, d 1918) and Mildred Drury.
His grandparents were Frederick William Uttley (b 1860) and Mary Turner (b 1859).
Lena & Thomas's son, also Thomas, was my mum's cousin. I am still in touch with his daughter (my second cousin) who lives in Sheffield.
Funnily enough, you say that the Uttley's originally came from Yorkshire. My uncle Tom moved to York shortly after his marriage to work in the railway yard at York.
I don't know about Uttleys Terrace, but Aunty Lena was born on Victoria Road, Dukinfield.
Regards
Diane
