Any info out there on a Brierley family! John Brierley was a 'registrar of bmd's' in Cheetham hill Rd, from around 1830's - 1865 when he died, one of his sons took over Samuel n.p. Brierley untill he died in 1907. But info on senior would be good although i'd like to track decendants of Samuel & Mary Jane (his wife) as well. Prominant family must be photos or idea where i may find some? this was my g-grandfather, he had 11 children 2 sets of twins amonst them, one twin Gladys Rose was on the stage (1930-40) somewhere i understand,, any clues to how i can find out more about her?? any help would be appreciated

I think the person you want is John Brierley (born abt 1809 in Manchester). He was a surgeon and so was his son, although not the son you mention, Samuel Newton Percy Brierley. Don't we just love people with unusual names and hopefully this info will get you a little bit further ! The Brierley family has no connection to mine, but since I was already looking for someone else in the Medical Register, I had a quick look for your people and located both John Brierley and another son, John Buckley Brierley (b abt 1831, Stalybridge). In 1851, John Brierley senior was a practicing surgeon and apothecarist living with his family in Grosvenor Street, Stalybridge. The Medical Register for 1859 indicates that he qualified for membership of the Royal College of Surgeons (Eng) in 1840, and was a licentiate of the Society of Apothecaries from 1850. You might want to ask either of these organisations about their records from the era; they might even have a photograph. I'm not sure what information you already have so here's a synopsis of the census returns about Samuel from 1851 - 1901. In 1861 and 1871, he was living at Davenport House, Dukinfield. His occupation was surgeon’s assistant, presumably to either his father or his brother but there is no subsequent record of him ever qualifying as a surgeon himself. The 1871 census also lists him as Registrar of BMD and his mother, Ann, as a 'proprietress of properties'. You might pick up a few more clues if you can find the relevant Land Registry or Probate records and the 1864 will you could get from the Cheshire Wills site: www.cheshire.gov.uk might prove helpful. In 1872, Samuel Newton Percy Brierley (b Stalybridge 1840: Ref DUK/4/25) married Ann Holes Bolton at Newcastle upon Tyne. Ann died in 1877, age 28, in Dukinfield (Tameside ref: DUK/59/15) Samuel's second marriage in 1881 (Castle Hall (Stalybridge), Holy Trinity: Tameside ref CE19/2/190) was to Mary Jane Byrom b 1858, Thurlstone, West Yorkshire. (In 1861, her father was manager of a bone works in Thurlstone, but both parents' were born in Mottram). The 1891 census identifies one set of twins born Dukinfield 1884 - Evelyn Maud Brierley(DUK/101/15) and Lilian Newton Brierley (DUK/101/16). The 1891 census identifies the second set born in 1889 - Muriel Daisy Brierley (DUK/114/39) and Gladys Rose Brierley (DUK/114/39) If you don't already have them, I kept copies of all the relevant census and Medical Register documents - just ask - but can't help with the stage stuff I'm afraid.
