Hi my name is Julie, I am researching my fathers side of the family, his father was born and grew up in Ashton-under-Lyne, his father before him lived in Audenshaw but was born in Hulme, as was his father before him. I am trying to find a death date for my great great grandad William Nicholls, who in 1891 at the age of 42 was living at 142 Guide Lane, Audenshaw. I havent been able to track him down after this date, and would dearly love to know when he died and where he was buried. Any help or suggestions would be gratefully accepted. I live now in Ontario, Canada, so I cant 'nip' to any records offices to check, so am not too sure how to go about this.
thanks Julie Cooper (nee Nicholls)

Hi Julie In 1901, William Nicholls (age 52) is still living at 142 Guide Lane, Audenshaw. Elizabeth (age 50) is his wife but there’s only 16-year old son William Henry still living with them. The 1911 census lists William but not his wife Elizabeth. There are two probable death records that tick the right boxes. One of these is Elizabeth Nicholls (age 51) registered at Audenshaw in 1902 (certificate reference AUD/42/61 ). There’s then a William Nicholls (aged 62) death registered at Ashton Town in 1911 (certificate reference AST/146/57). I can’t find either of these people on the Tameside Burials website, but you’ll find both the deaths recorded on www.cheshirebmd.org.uk (which, assuming they remained in this area, is also the best free resource to help you track BMD records for the rest of the family). Cheers Woody
