I have been spending more time gathering information on my husbands side for a break with working on my close relatives.
James Stanfield Married Lilly Atherton they had six children James, Arthur Peter, Jean, Barbara and Carmel.
James Stanfield father was James Stanfield who married Louisa Whittenbury.
I have found many links in the Whittenbury line going right back to around 1796. Some time after this date Joseph Whittenbury married Rebecca. The other side moved into the Roden family where I have managed to go back to approx 1700 where John Roden married Ann Tomlins.
George F Atherton Married Gertrude Emma Green so far I have only their daughter Lilly Atherton. I have managed to trace George F Atherton back to the early 1720 William Atherton married to Jane Caldwell.
This still leave me with plenty of work on the female side along both but I am seeing results now and made contact with a member of the Whittenbury family whose father was my husbands grandmothers brother. We will be working together on some links of the Whittenbury tree.

Hi Florence, Nice to see you back on the forum again. As you know I also have Stanfield ancestors. So, would you mind putting birth years/place of births on for your James Stanfields, to see if we are researching the same family? Thanks Ann

Dear Florence Im interested in any information you may know if any about a Sarah Jane Stanfield, birth around 1879, who married Alfred Lee around 1901 in tameside. I cant find any records of the marraige but there is a listing on free bmd for September 1901 for Alfred Lee in Ashton.

Hi Artmak I did a bit of Stanfield research with Florence last year, although we didn't find any marriages to anyone named 'Lee' at the time. I think your Sarah Jane Stanfield was born at Denton in 1875, and if you reference the Albert Lee 1901 marriage you mention at www.cheshirebmd.org.uk, you'll find he married Sarah Jane Harrison in a civil ceremony at Ashton. Of course it might be that Sarah Jane was previously married to someone named 'Harrison, or, that her mother had re-married somebody called 'Harrison' and Sarah Jane had assumed her step-father's second name. Is Alfred Lee a dead cert for an ancestor ?

Hi Woody I have Alfred Lee as the father on my mothers marraige certificate in 1940, although he was deceased and his occupation was given as , carter. I also have Alfred lee living with Sarah jane Lee in the 1911 census at 10 leech Street, Dukinfield, he was 36 and she was 32.

Sorry all I am a little behind with this research but I am back now feeling ready to restart, I have arranged to phone Fred Lewis in Kent to catch up on his research share certificates.
This is before I start to order marriage certificates.

Hi Woody I am about to give more time to the research after a long break.
I have heard that you can now use Tameside library to research is this true plus if yes is there any special days you can access the information. I think it would be good to have time out of the home researching to give me chance to focus better on the tree. Need to weed out any errors I have made over the last few years while trying to get back into the research.

Hi Florence
I hope everything is more settled for you now, and welcome back.
I do use the library frequently but I'm no expert on the facilities there. They're a bit like computers to me - I know how to use them but I don't know how they work. Gay will know much more.
The local stuides library is in Ashton and it's open daily from 9.00 until 8.00 except Wednesday, Friday when it shuts at 5.00 and Saturday at 4,00. If you don't already have it at home, you can access the library version of Ancestry, local newspapers, Tameside BMD originals, Trade Directories and all manner of other records stretching back into the 1800s that aren't available on the internet.
It's probably advisable to book the machinery (0161 342 4242) in advance - things like readers for microfiche BMD records/ newspaper records, and a computer - and to prepare the stuff you want to research beforehand so the staff have the best chance of directing you to the most appropriate sources. The staff are very helpful and it's quite a chatty place to be.
Do set aside plenty of time. There's so much stuff it's easy to get side-tracked in there.
Woody
