The Cheshire Record Office has just released a fantastic new resource on their web-site. They have scanned 8 Cheshire Trade Directories for us to browse or search. The directories are: 1822-3 Pigot's Directory of Cheshire 1857 Post Office Directory of Cheshire 1871 Worrall's Directory of Warrington 1878 Post Office Directory of Cheshire 1895 Slater's Directory of Warrington, Widnes & St Helens 1902 Kelly's Directory of Cheshire 1906 Kelly's Directory of Cheshire 1910 Kelly's Directory of Cheshire They can be found at: cheshiredirectories.manuscripteye.com/index.htm

Thanks for this list, Gay. Looks really useful and the e-mail has reminded me to give people details of a similar site I found accidentally a few years ago. It was a project funded to Leicester University and although the project itself now finished, so little chance of new material, the final product provides free access to over a hundred digitised Trades Directories. There's a selection of Directories from every region in England and the North-West is particularly well covered. The URL is www.historicaldirectories.org, or alternatively, just Google it. The site's still up and running because I've just tried it both ways. On the disadvantages side, it's rather cumbersome, can be very slow and is likely to take a while to get used to navigating your way round it. Even then it can still be frustratingly slow so I tend to use it after midnight or early morning. The greatest reward for patience is the wealth of free information it contains.

Thanks, Gay. Great site. Hello, Woody. I don't seem to get any results from your link. Could you check it, please? Ta. Eric.

Hello Eric, I've just checked that Historical Directories link and it was the comma on the end of it which was causing the problem. It should be: www.historicaldirectories.orgBut, as Woody says you do have to allow yourself some time to search through, because the site is rather clunky, but worth it if you persevere. Good Luck!!

Hello Eric
I see that Gay has already identified the problem. The comma appeared in that place in my original e-mail and must have just been inadvertently copied across.
