Hi Florence
Thanks for the extra information. I looked up the original copy of the 1901 census for this family, although I'm not quite sure how much further it gets you.
In 1901, the birthplace of both Florence A and William J Taylor is given as Hurst, Lancashire and he's a greengrocer working in his own account but living at 32 Ashton Road, Droylsden rather than the address you have. (I think ‘202’ in column 1 is actually the schedule number of the census return, rather than the house number).
I'm pretty sure the child 'Fred A' is actually Frederick Arden Taylor, born at Middleton in the Jun Qtr 1886 and registered exactly where you would expect for Middleton i.e. Oldham (Vol
, page 706)
In the 1901 census original, Edith and John's birthplaces are given as 'Droylsden' and there are registrations at Audenshaw for Edith (ref: AUD/52/21); John (AUD/55/61). There are several 'Audenshaw' possibilities for Ethel's birth between 1897-1899 and you'll find the possibilities on the Cheshire BMD website.
To try and pin things down, I then looked for and found Frederick Arden Taylor in the 1891 census.
His father, William Jos (b Blackley, 1863) is a leather dresser living at 94 Ashton New Road, Droylsden and although the children are the same as in 1901, his wife is different so that seems to confirm a prior marriage.
She's called 'Eunice', born at Middleton, Lancashire although the writing is partially obscured and she could be either age 20 or 26. She’s listed as married and defined as a housekeeper, but the next puzzle is that I don't think she's Eunice 'Clarke'.
The only marriage I could find at the right dates for the children’s births was between William J Taylor and Eunice Mills at Oldham Register Office or Registrar Attended, 1884 (ref: RM/56/68).
Again, that would be right for the Middleton area, and there is a birth record for Eunice Mills at Oldham in 1867, Vol
, page 575. On the other hand, I couldn't find a birth for Eunice 'Clarke' anywhere local to this region.
There's then a death record for Eunice Taylor at Audenshaw in 1892, age 24 (ref: AUD/35/61) which would allow for a second marriage to Florence in 1894.
From the 1891 census, it's also clear that Frederick, Edith and John are his children with Eunice, whereas Ethel's mother is probably Florence.
These details would match the gap between William's children that we know about through the 1901 census, and I couldn't find any marriage to 'Clarke'.
Do you think this stuff is a possibility, or does it just eliminate this family ?
