I want to find a John Carter born in Marsden on the 1841 census.
Findmypast doesnt recognise Marsden and I have tried to find it in the free BMD list but it isnt there.
Where do I look?

Hi Hollyberry
No problem, so I suggest you treat yourself to that drink ! There were less than 50 pages to look through so it was quite straightforward, and I picked up some bits and pieces for myself that I'd never have found without your reference. Inspector of Nuisance is a really glorious job title isn't it ? Brings to mind all kinds of images.
I have people in my own tree across Yorkshire, and Marsden was part of the Huddersfield registration district in 1841. Depending on the address, there were also close links between Marsden and the neighbouring Almondbury and Lockwood areas. I also found that these three locations were sometimes interchangeable.
If you know the address, you can search in the National Archives and that might tell you the district more precisely. The link I have is now out of date but you'll find it through Google if you enter 'Marsden registration district 1841' and then hit the 'Census Street District' tab. It's a bit fiddly when you get in there and there are no residents listed, but if you persevere you'll no doubt get there eventually.
There's also a very active Family History Society and one of my Canadian relatives is a member. She might be willing to look something up if you get really stuck.

Hello Hollyberry, Just to add to Woody's information, I looked up the Almondbury page of the GENUKI website: www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/WRY/Almondbury/index.htmlIt does say that Marsden was mostly in the Ancient Parish of Almondbury and another part was in Huddersfield. I too have relatives from Marsden and Almondbury including one millowner who was murdered by Luddites. There is quite a lot of information about Almondbury on the GENUKI page which I think you will find interesting. Secondly I have found eight John Carters living in the area in 1841, so if you have any further information (date of birth, name of spouse etc?) best wishes, GayJ

Hi Thanks Woody and Gay. I looked up the Marsden Family History page and found it really interesting. I hadnt realised that Enoch the Hammer was from Marsden. My John Carter was born 1815. He married in Ashton in 1846 so he may have been in Ashton by 1841. But I cant find him in Ashton or Marsden on the 41 or 51 census. I'm not surprised about the 51 census I have lots of blanks there in my family tree! He was living in Water street, Ashton in 1861 with wife Mary. I cant find him in Water Street on the unfilmed 1851 Census. I did find a John Carter baptism 3 Jan 1815, parents Joseph and Hannah on the Family search website. Do these match up with anything you have Gay? I'm excited that I had ancestors living in such an active Luddite area.
