I remember living on Oldham Road in Ashton, near the gasworks, which is now Ashton baths, in the late 1940's early 1950's, when sweets were still on ration and then when they came off ration the delight at being able to buy anything without restriction, provided you had the money. A shop near us had one of the first televisions in the shop window and large crowds used to gather round just to watch the picture. Our first radio was worked by an accumalator which was like a large battery and my job was to take it weekly to a shop further down the road to get it charged up. We couldnt afford a television in those days and the only person we knew with a car was the insurance collector.
