Hi, I'm new to this site, I'm currently researching my Nan's side, the Waterhouse surname, they lived at 37 Raynham street, Ashton under Lyne. Her mother was Howard of Ashton

Hi, I'm interested in finding out a bit more on Gertrude Howard, she was born in 1885 & married Joseph Waterhouse who was born in Hayfield Derbyshire. Also Gertrude's father Daniel Buckley Howard, born 1850 in Ardwick, but died 1894 in Preston & wasn't living with his family, he was always a bit of a mystery, he was married to Mary Ridgeway. Many thanks, I'm hoping to travel up to Manchester soon.

Just wondering if you have the right information about Daniel Buckley Howard’s death date. The man who died in 1894 at Preston was Daniel Howard of Ashfield, Nooklands, Fulwood, Lancashire, a well-established wine & spirit merchant and a local councillor at Fulwood. He died 14th December 1894 at West Cliff, Preston and Probate was given at Lancaster to Samuel Howard and Thomas Hewitt, cashiers. Effects £5,364.3s.7d (close to £600,000 today).
His brother, William, owned a brewery and died suddenly in 1892. That same year, Daniel's daughter, Edith Ann married William Ignatius Swarbrick at Fulwood. Each of these events was reported in the Preston Chronicle.
I can't find an alternative death record for Daniel in the UK, but there's a ship's manifest record for a Daniel Howard, a 43 yr-old married bobbin turner of Ashton under Lyne, who arrived at Boston, Massachusetts on the SS Cephalonia. The ship sailed from Liverpool on June 14th, 1894 and he doesn't seem to have been accompanied by anyone. The record says this Daniel paid for his own voyage, had no contract of work to rely on, and after disembarking was headed for his uncle's (can't read the handwriting but somebody 'Robinson') at Ashton, Rhode Island.
Daniel's wife, Mary, says she was still married in the 1901 census and if the family is difficult to locate in 1911, perhaps they also went to the USA a bit later. It was a common pattern for the husband to go alone first. Anyway, exploring this possibility might help you get a bit closer to resolving the family mystery.
