Hello. My name is Margaret. I live in Reno, Nevada, USA. I have been searching for my gggrandmother's family for about 10 years now. Her name was Elizabeth TAYLOR and the only information I had on her was from my grandmother and from the death certificate I found for her from Cincinnati, Ohio. My grandmother told the story that Elizabeth had come from "Manchester, England". The death certificate also had recorded "Manchester, England". Nothing more. The informant, Elizabeth's daughter, did not even know her grandparents names. It has been a hard row to hoe but I managed to follow Elizabeth back to this area. I am researching TAYLORS, LIVINGSTONES, DANIELS. I guess further information needs to be posted elsewhere.

Hi. My family is Butterworths and they lived in Audenshaw and Denton from at least 1800, although I thing they moved from Ashton or Oldham before that. Some of the family lived on the stretch of road from Guide Bridge through to Haughton Green continuously for almost 200 years. I have many photos of the Butterworths and extended family dating back well into the 1800s as well as birth death and marriage certificates, newspaper clippings, apprenticeship documents and even schoolwork. Many older Denton people will remember the family pharmacy Collins and Butterworth which was at Crown Point Denton, and is now the Green Cross Pharmacy. Also researching Newton with strong Ashton links.

Living in Mossley, I was surprised when I started to research my family history just how many of my ancestors are from Tameside. The Halls lived mainly Dukinfield and then Stalybridge from 1790's. John Mills and his wife Isabella farmed Staly Hall Farm from mid 1800's until approx. 1890 and then she continued to live in the area after John's death. His brothers Allen and George were a grocer and a draper respectively in Mossley. Robert Harrison came from a farming family in Culcheth to farm at Burnedge Lane Farm, Grasscroft and married a member of the Mills family. If anyone else is researching any of these families I would love to hear from you and share information.

Hi everybody. Well I've finally joined the forum and looking forward to asking questions and maybe even helping others. I have been researching for a few years and this has led to here. I am researching the the FIELDING AND ELLOR/ER families from Godley/Hyde and Ashton/Dukinfield respectively. I have already had wonderful help from local people (thanks Tricia and Irene) but need to expand and flesh out more of the line and their stories. Looking forward to great exchanges of information. Hello, my parents were born in Lancashire, Dad in Bolton and Mum in Miles Platting, I am researching the Halliwell Family, Mum's side, who lived in Manchester from the early 1800's. Mum's name was Frances, sadly passed in 1977. Granddad was Greenwood Halliwell, Gran Elizabeth, mum had two brothers, Greenwood (known as thingy) and Thomas (Tom) and a sister Louise, also an older sister Martha from Grans first marriage to Edward Whittaker who died in the Boer War. Like many I wish I had listened more as a child and taken more of an interest in my family roots, I've always loved history and am now seeing it through the eyes of my ancestors. Laura :-)

Hello to eveybody. I have been researching my Mothers side of the family for about a year now. I started with her paternal side first as they have an uncommon surname and I grew up round the corner from where they all lived, but now it`s time for the difficult bit !!! So here`s what I have so far:- My Grandmother Marjorie Aspinall was born August 1913 in Newton by Hyde, Ashton under Lyne district. Her father was Henry Aspinall (born possibly 1882) Henry married Betsy Young Simpson in 1907 at Rosemount, Newton. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

Hi, This is my first posting. I'm very interested in both family anf local history though I'm afraid I've recently been neglecting both. However the spark has re-ignited and I'm ready for the off. I'm particularly interested in the Waterhouse family from Stalybridge and Hope in Derbyshire and the Schofield family from Mossley. Other names I have an interest in locally are Buckley, Whitehead, Thacker, and Bailey.

Hi Dougalgeorge
Don’t know whether any of this will help you out. It’s not absolutely verified but it might give you a few more avenues to research.
Simpson:
If it’s the right family, their origins are in the Rochdale, Burnley and Clitheroe areas of Lancashire.
There’s a Betsy Young Simpson (b 1880, Rochdale) whose father is Greg Simpson (abt 1854, Burnley, Lancashire). He married Margaret Alice Jane Marsden at Rochdale in 1878.
One of her father’s siblings is another Betsy Young Simpson (b 1846 in Burnley, Lancashire) which seems a bit of a clincher. She married Thomas Pilling at Rochdale in 1872
Amongst your Betsy Young Simpson’s siblings is a brother, also called Greg Simpson (b 1883, Rochdale), and another brother called Stout Simpson (b 1893, Dukinfield, Cheshire).
In 1891, the family was living at 18 Brook Street, Castleton, and since Stout Simpson is the only person to be born outside the Rochdale area, this would give you an approximate date for the family migrating to Tameside. In 1901, they were all living at 247 Dukinfield Road, Newton, Hyde.
The first name ‘Stout’ seems to have passed down the generations, which, I would think, is more verification that this is the right line to track. It descends through the ‘Marsden’ line.
Aspinall
If you’re right about Henry Aspinall being born in 1882, his family origins are in the Glossop area of Derbyshire. Fortunately, his birth record is one that the free Cheshire BMD site has recently updated with his mother’s maiden name – 'Hazledine' – so it's relatively easy to figure out the connections from there.
Henry Aspinall (b 1883, Mottram-in-Longdendale) was born to David Aspinall (b 1851, Woolley Bridge, Glossop, Derbyshire: d 1915, Newton & Godley, Hyde, Cheshire) and Sarah Hazeldine (b Stockport, Cheshire). Sarah's father had the grocer's shop in Woolley Bridge.
They were married 1876 in Glossop, and in 1881 were living just up the hill from Woolley Bridge at Hill End, Mottram in Longdendale which, so far as I can work out, is somewhere along Broadbottom Road. David’s occupation is given as a gardener.
That was still his occupation in 1891 and there were now two other children – Harriet Ann (b 1878, Hollingworth; Herbert, b Mottram in Longdendale) - all still living at Hill End.
By 1901, the whole family has migrated down the hill and are living together in Gun Street, Hyde, but David is now a labourer in an Iron works. Henry and his brother are both apprentice iron turners.
There's a marriage record for Marjorie Aspinall to John Hastie 1930, Birmingham North, but this might not be relevant to your family.
Hope this stuff helps you to moves forward a bit.

Hi
According to the BMD death records, Robert Jones Whitworth died in Ashton under Lyne in 1868 aged 51.
Unless, of course, there were two people of the same name in Ashton

Hi June49
If you can provide a few names and approximate dates of birth, or give us an idea about what you already know, that would be a big help. There are a few hundred people called Burgess in this area in the late 1800s so, without a bit more information, I'm afraid it's needle in a haystack stuff.
