Hello everyone, I joined the site because although I have an excellent family history on my dad's side (a family tree down to the 13th century) I have less on my mum's side, and there are some really intriguing events I would like to pursue. I'm looking into my maternal grandfather's side of the family and this is where my interest lies initially; there was a major family split and I have no idea whether I have any relatives on this side. I'm going to have to proceed cautiously as my history includes a murder and I am conscious that the person who was charged also lived in the area and may well have relatives remaining. My grandfather was Frank Walsh and the family lived in Newton. He had a number of siblings but I have never known any of them. His sister Kathleen was murdered at the age of 17 and it seems that this is where the family split began. I am aware that the family were Catholic, but I was brought up as C of E; another indication of a major family split. I have more information about the murder, including the name of the person charged and his address, but am reluctant to give more details until I get some advice from members on how to pursue this without potentially causing his family any distress - for all I know, this information was never known by later generations and would come as a great shock. I'm not sure how active the site is, so I await further guidance before giving full details Thanks

Hello! Following my father’s ancestry line has brought me to Stalybridge and this forum. Dad was from Leeds. Nearly all his ancestors that I have been able to trace were from there or nearby villages. However, my 3rd great-grandfather, JOSEPH SMITH - in the 1841 and 1851 censuses - is listed as being from Stalybridge, with a birth date of c 1796. He’s already in Yorkshire when he marries in 1816. That 1816 wedding is the earliest record of Joseph that I can find. I know we’re into “needle in a haystack” territory but maybe someone on this forum just might have some information….
