As most of you may well know, Manchester Archives and Local Studies is going to be relocated whilst Manchester Central Library is being refurbished. This will cause a little bit of an upheaval.
If you want to keep track on what is happening, you can click on the link below.

This not about the relocation, but details of the Free 1911 Census. This will be available at MALS & GMCRO shortly. I'll be updating my web page on this in the morning.

Free access to the 1911 Census is now available at Manchester Central Library. See previous message.
Gerard Sadly the service has been withdrawn for the reasons laid out below.
GerardFrom Manchester Archives and Local Studies - Please note, Manchester Archives and Local Studies no longer has free access to the 1911 census for England and Wales. A set amount of free credits for the 1911 census have been provided by The National Archives at Manchester Archives and Local Studies. This has proved immensely popular, meaning free access in Manchester Archives and Local Studies will no longer be available from 1 October 2009. You can still access this census online . . . . In place of the 1911 census, the National Archives is providing 3 months' free access to its Documents Online service, in Manchester Archives and Local Studies. The service includes wills, medal index cards, regimental diaries and many other collections - see www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/?source=ddmenu_search5The above information is based on posters supplied to Manchester Archives and Local Studies by the National Archives. Though the poster does not say so, there is also no longer free access to Findmypast. We are placing a subscription with Findmypast so that there will be free access on two of the Manchester Archives and Local Studies computers; please ring 0161 234 1979 to check if this is available. Finally, we are currently out of stock of the 1911 census vouchers - but these are now on order. We do apologise for any inconvenience caused.

Manchester City Council Burial site has been available for some time. It has always been possible to search the index free of charge, but if you wanted to obtain the full details you had to pay.
This is still the case, but you can now view ALL the information free of charge at Manchester Central Library. In order to do this you will have to go to the Local Studies Unit and ask the staff about the availability of the information.

Manchester Archives will be closing down at Manchester Central Library on Thursday 25th February. It is expected that it will be three months before they reappear in their temporary home in GMCRO at Marshall Street where they will provided a limited service.
Gerard
I should have added the for the time being the Local studies department and the Microfilm unit will remain open. They move to Eliot House shortly.

Hello,
One or two things have happened since I last posted on this subject. The updates to the proceedings can be viewed on the link in the previous message and on other forums and social media sites. I obviously do not expect everyone to agree with all of my views. I do think however I must ask people to look at my points regarding search facilities for BMD certificates which could and should be offered by the new Manchester Archives+ that were previously offered by the Manchester Register Office in better days gone by and some other Register Offices. Even today the GRO does supply a twelve month search service.
Begging your indulgence, the cost of providing a long term search facility should not be a problem to any local council given the fantastic ongoing project by the various county BMD transcription projects.
I have listened to and understood some of the financial arguments about the cost the local councils may incur in supplying BMD certificates to the public. What would they rather how us all do? Buy certificates from them, or spend in many cases, a lesser sum purchasing them from the GRO. It may not be well known or advertised, but the GRO do carry out free twelve month searches.
