Hi Marie I have both these surnames in my trees but, unfortunately, they don’t seem to be connected to your own ancestors. However, when trying to decide who was and who wasn't several years ago, I had to research all the Holt – Whittaker lines I could find. Since I invariably hang on to my internet research evidence I can share a few of the details you’re asking about. Katie Holt married Edward Whittaker at Stalybridge New St George church in 1910. Katie was born in 1891 to Edward Holt and his wife Mary Jane (Hetherington) who had married each other at Castle Hall Holy Trinity, Stalybridge in late 1889. The 1911 census reveals that Mary Jane was born 1870 at Stalybridge, and was a widow who had given birth to six children altogether. Sadly, only four of the children had survived childhood and they were living with her at 6 Market Street, Stalybridge. The household included newly married daughter Katie who is registered in her married name of Whittaker. Her husband, Edward Whittaker, is not registered at this address in 1911. Mary Jane Holt (Hetherington) was born 1870 and her mother’s maiden name is given as McCLean. In the 1901 census, Mary Jane’s brother, Walker Hetherington (b 1877) is boarding with the family and it is he who provides the relevant BMD information about the McClean connection. Using Walker Hetherington to research the 1891 census, we find him in Stalybridge living with his parents and siblings. Mary Jane’s parents were therefore most likely to be James Hetherington (b abt 1843) and Kate (McClean b abt 1850), each born in Ireland. Since their eldest son, William (b abt 1875) was also born in Ireland, we’d have to assume their marriage and early histories lie in Irish records and they migrated to England between . At the time, these records were almost impossible to research without a personal visit to Ireland and since I had already decided these lines were not connected to me, I abandoned my search at that point If you want it, I have more information indicating the relevant siblings which I took from successive census returns ? Just ask. Alternatively, you'll find plenty of relevant births, marriages and deaths information on the free website www.cheshirebmd.org.uk. Cheers Woody
