Hi, Thanks Maureen, I'm away for a few days but I'll try and check out the names you've provided. They sound familiar but names keep recurring in families don't they!

Hi Thanks Maureen I'm prety sure Elisha's father is called DAniel but cant find him as yet on the 1841 Census. Looking at Elisha's addresses he seems to have done quite well for himself and perhaps I'll be able to find reference to him in business records etc. He was certainly wealthy enough for his name to appear as a financial contributor to the Chartist cause, since I found his name on a list.

The flashing folder icon, is an indication that yours is a hot topic. I think it happens when the topic has run to more than one page - nothing sinister.
very best wishes GayJ (admin)

I have found a Thomas Alexander Skirvin Saxon when looking back at the owners of Rock Cottage on Kocker Hill (I have had to change the spelling of the street name as the software that drives ths website appears to think it is rude!).
He owned, Rock Cottage, Kocker Hill, Stalybridge from 1873 – 1881 He was described as Manager of A Cotton Mill when he bought the house.
Thomas was married to Harriet Ann Saxon Thomas Alexander Skirvin Saxon died 24/1/1881
Harriet Ann Saxon died 1 February 1888
They had a son Robert Whitworth Saxon.
Robert Whitworth Saxon died 2 September 1929. His wife Mary Saxon died 27/02/1936.
Are these part of the Saxons you have been looking at? Let me know. I can get you a picture of the house if you like and possibly a photo of Thomas Saxon.

You're fantastic, thankyou! Thomas Skervin Saxon was the son of the Elisha I've been looking into. I would love a photo of him and the house! Elisha Saxon's first wife was Hannah Platt (I've just been looking into her family) It turns out the Platts were quite a family too! Her father Joshua was cousin to the famous (at least in Stalybridge terms) Robert Platt but thats as far as I got. If this means that Elisha and/or his father in law were mill owners then it's poss that Thomas worked in their mill. My next task is to try and locate ANY info about the Stalybridge Mills and their owners as I believe from someone who has some of the same family tree on ancestry that Robert Platt and Joshua joint owned amill somewhere. my e-mail address (if I'm allowed to post it ) is damian@delsoldato.orangehome.co.uk

Just another thought, Elisha lived on Huddersfield Rd in 1841C and 40 Acres Lane Stalybridge in 1851C. He marrried again after Sarah (his 2nd wife died) and died in 1852

More Saxons!!! I am trying to track down my great great grandfather, James Saxon and I am wondering whether anybody has relevant information. The first confirmed trace is the 1851 census where he is 26 and living with his wife, Hannah (nee Earnshaw) and son, William Henry. They are living with his mother in law, Ann Earnshaw, who is running the Lamb Inn on Crescent Road in Dukinfield (sadly, demolished only a couple of years ago). In 1861, James is running the Lamb Inn with further children, Edwin, James, Ann, Abraham and Thomas. In 1871 and 1881 they have moved to 5 Trafalgar Street, Ashton under Lyne.
I would be very interested in any records from before 1851. Some information suggests that his parents were William and Martha Saxon from Ashton under Lyne, but there are two William and Martha Saxons with a son James in the Ashton area in the 1841 census. Any information would be welcome. As I live in the South west it is difficult to check local records

Hi, Apologies, as I've not been on for ages and haven't had much time to devote to research. However - a quick update on my Saxons - I discovered that Old Elisha's first wife was hannah Platt of Stalybridge mill fame!! I posted a separate strand on the Platts in case this one is getting too big. I also need to get my head round all the other Saxon's that keep cropping up as there are probably some cousin links in there too! I saw the Ann Wild marriage, Maureen but am doubtful about it linking in to mine as yet. Also, think I've got the image you talk about - is it the same as the one in one my messages in the strand here? I think someone has kindly sent it to me. Cheers, jill

Hi Willertonm
One of the forum member who probably knows about the Saxon ancestry is 'Delsol'and perhaps she'll respond. In the meantime, Robert Whitworth Saxon died aged 70 and was buried at St Michaels and all Angels Parish Church, Ashton under Lyne on the 5th September 1929. You'll get that from the Lancashire On-line Parish Clerk Project website (www.lan-opc.org.uk)
The officiating vicar was Rev F A Whitehead of Old St George's, Stalybridge so you might also find records if you visit the St George's website.
Robert's address at death was Rock Cottage, thingyer Hill, Stalybridge and there might well be information on the thingyer Hill website.
If all else fails, I've collaborated with Delsol ocasionally and can give you snippets from the Saxon ancestry. I seem to remember dates as early as 1750, but the stuff I have about Robert himself begins with the 1861 census where he was living with his grandparents (Robert P & Betty Whitworth) at 100 Brierley Street, Castle Hall, Stalybridge. Let me know if you want more.
