I am researching my family history. A substantial number in the 19th century and earlier lived in Ashton under Lyne and Dukinfield. My surname is SAXON and I have traced back to WILLIAM SAXON (B: abt 1799 in Ashton under Lyne). At various times they married into families GEE, EARNSHAW, ROEBUCK and GARSIDE. On the other side of the family I have traced an ADthingy BARTON, who appears to have worked for the canal company and moved to Ashton under Lyne from Notinghamshire in mid 19th century. I am interested in exchanging information about any of these relations

Hi John
delsol was also looking at the Saxon family a while ago. I have a Mary Saxon marrying into my family born Stalybridge about 1839, her father was John Saxon (a Mechanic) born about 1911 at Knott Lanes. Have done some research but cannot find it at the moment. I have put a page from a Family Bible on the photo page but it is very hard to read

Hello All, Born and bred in Carrbrook, Stalybridge, Maternal side from Mossley, Paternal side from Denton, I have a lot of roots in Tameside! On my mothers side, I am researching Rowley, Welham, Walker, Schofield, Mason, Rivers, Marland. There is an element of overlap into Saddleworth. On my fathers side - Smith(!!!), Miles, Wilthingy, Worsley. I have got quite far in my research, mainly thanks to my lovely Grandma and her collection of family photos, however I do have a lot of gaps in my Tameside ancestors, especially deaths and burials.
I am very proud of my family roots and I love researching it - any advice/ help is always appreciated.
Looking forward to being a part of the Tameside forum.

Good afternoon.
I have joined to further research into my family who lived (and continue to live) in the Thameside area from around 1880 until the present day.
The main family surnames are Tindall, Carter and Gordon.

Hi to all, I am trying to help a lady from Seattle who contacted me recently in the mistaken belief that a Samuel Ashton on my family tree was the same as on on hers. Subsequently it proved not to be the case but she was such a lovely lady that I offered to help her all I could on this side of the pond. My relatives are mainly from Rochdale but the more I have investigated her relatives the more I have become fascinated by them and life in Stalybridge. Samuel Ashton was the starting point and Rassbottom Street was the common denominator. Samuel was landlord of the Hope and Anchor pub and showed as such in the trade directories for 1821, 1825 and 1832. I have recently bought 1848 and the Hope and Anchor does not even show. Did it change its name? Did it close down? Samuel himself was described as an inn keeper in 1841 census and his son Ralph Ashton also had a tavern in Rassbottom Street. By 1852 Samuel was retired but what I'd like to find out is what happened to the Hope and Anchor. Anybody know what happened to it? I'd be grateful, as would Gloria in Seattle, for any local knowledge. Many thanks Alan

Thanks for that Gay. I have sent for a book on Stalybridge pubs 1750-1990 which may arrive today or tomorrow. Will let you know if it solves the problem, to save you a job. Many thanks. Alan
