Hi, am researching my Grindrod and Cooper families around the Tameside area, particularly Ashton, Stalybridge, Dukinfield, Mossley. In particular, looking for any information about William Mitchell Grindrod and his siblings - Harry, David, Edith, Fred, Mary, Milford, Eric and Hilda, born between 1889 and 1908.

Hello I am hoping to trace my Family History back as far as possible. My fathers name was HALL and my mothers name was FOWDEN. I am also interested in the CRESSWELL family (my maternal grandmother). I have done quite well so far I think having found names and dates of potential ancestors but now wanted to see if I can find out anything about the familys themselves.Any help??

Originally from Hollinwood-Stable street, my dad was a miner at Bradford pit pre WW2 up until the 50s when he moved to Ferranti on TV production. I went to Stansfield Road Infant/junior school and then onto South Chadderton Secondary. I joined in the hope of viewing any old pictures of my old stomping grounds as a kid. We moved over to Chadderton near Long Lane-Sycamore Ave because of a compulsory Purchase of our family home to make way for the motorway. Left about 1972-3ish.. when did they start building!! I left the area to join the RAF in 1976..32 years later now settled in Lincolnshire.

I've been researching my grandfather's side of the family who originate from Ashton/Stalybridge/Dunkinfield. I've come up against a dead end in finding out when he died and where he might be buried and need some help.

Hi Gordon You're right about there being plenty of people named Ganson in this district, the oldest I could find being 82 year-old Ann Ganson of Fairfield, Droylsden whose origins are described as 'Foreign' in the 1841 census. So far as I understand it, the 1841 census term 'Foreign' for place of birth really does mean somewhere outside any of the four UK countries or Eire. The neighbouring house is occupied by the 'Superintendent of The Seniors' House' which, in turn, is possibly related to the Fairfield Moravian Settlement'. Ultimately, there's a fair chance that the line will eventually trace back to the Caithness region of Scotland and that it won't always appear as 'Ganson' so it might be profitable to try some of the alternative spellings - Gunson; Gaunson; Gavenson; etc. You could do worse than having a look at one of the popular international message boards such as genforum.genealogy.com/ganson. You have to join but it's free and it does everything it says on the tin. I mention that one specifically because I've had very good results from most of the messages I've posted there.

There were Gansons in Fairfield Square when I lived there. Charlie was in Sister Street and, I think, in the army in WW2. There were no children for me to play with.

Just joined. I live in Ashton and love doing my family history. My uncle rang me last night and hinted that we have family connections with the area. Farnsworth family one of which may have been a mayor.

It's almost inevitable that if your ancestors were from the Saddleworth district, at some point in your history there will be a connection to the Lawton family.
For early 'Mayall' people, you could do worse than have a look at Trevor Lawton's family website (just Google 'Lawtons of Saddleworth') where amongst the 'surnames list' you'll find about 40 Mayall references from the 1700s and early 1800s. If nothing else, you might get a few more leads that you can follow up.
Gay has also put a transcription of the 1811 Mossley census on our own forum website where someone called Benjamin Mayall appears as a grocer.

Hello. Just joined this forum today. My father's family, surnamed Hall lived in Ashton u Lyne from 1821 to 1988: William Hall (1821-1886), George Hall (1858-1917), George Hall (1886-1927) and Wilfred Hall (1911-1988). If these names and dates mean anything, I would be pleased to hear from you.
I had a great uncle, Harry Hall, (b1896 Ashton, d1972 in California, USA) who started out in the MUSIC HALLS around Ashton/Manchester about 1917. He had a wooden leg and was a dancer. Went on to appear in a black & white silent movie in USA as well as being an actor & later a Theatrical Manager.
If anyone has info about the Music Halls between 1910 and 1920 in the Ashton area would love to hear from you.

Hello, I am new to both this as a new member, and to this form of social communication. I already have enjoyed reading other members' interests and look forward to putting down my own queries for some help in due course. I was born in Ashton, as were many of my ancestors, and I emigrated to Australia in 1969, and just recently I have been seeking out some family history via the Ancestry site and Tameside site.
Looking forward to further reading. Tonyf

Hi All, Just joined this list because I've just found it as I was browsing. I am researching my wife's ancestors mainly in Mossley having arrived there from Hattersley. The names I'm particularly interested in are ROBINSON, WILLIAMSON, CRABTREES and NORTONS. The latter at one stage or another were licensees of the The Fox Tavern. I'm fairly well acquainted with Stalybridge having worked for 18 years at Sterling Mouldings and later a stint at Millwood Rubber. I don't have ancestors from Tameside but I do have them from Winsford so if you come across HITCHENs or VERNONs I would be interested. Hope some of these names ring a bell.
